Venezuela has 43 national parks, covering 21.76% of Venezuela's territory and every state in Venezuela has one or more national parks.
As early as 1935 the first national park was created in a stretch of mountainous land along the northern coast previously owned by the Venezuelan dictator Gómez, who died that year. Since then, many more parks have been created, alongside biosphere reserves and wetland protection laws. Today, the country has 43 national parks, covering a fifth of Venezuela's territory.
