SYDNEY — The Gold Coast in Australia sometimes gets a bad rap as a tourist destination.
Over the years, a number of factors haven't helped the image of the coastal holiday area in Queensland.
Schoolies, the annual end-of-school festival, where drunk 18-year-olds spread like a rash over the streets of Surfers Paradise, doesn't make you want to visit. The teeny weeny gold bikini-clad Meter Maids, who feed the parking meters for overdue drivers, doesn't add any class. The perception of bikies creating havoc in the region over the past few years doesn't scream "Holiday!"
