The tousle-haired Liverpudlian – arguably the most famous contemporary conductor in the world – is set to celebrate his landmark birthday with a series of concerts in London next month with the Berlin Philharmonic, the orchestra he’s led for the past decade and a half.
But his musical story started 200 miles north of London, as a talented youngster growing up in Liverpool.
He is the son of Denis Rattle, a Royal Naval Commander, and his wife Pauline.
