Of course that deeply disturbed rapport was only hinted at in Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece Psycho; hence the genius of Carlton Cuse in creating a prequel series exploring the events leading up to that notoriously macabre epilogue. A&E’s Bates Motel is a case study in, ehm, overprotective parenting, paranoia and crime underpinned by extraordinarily well developed – and surprisingly human – characters.
