Kids know that practice is important in developing any skill; our job as parents is making our expectations clear AND creating a positive environment to encourage practice. You'll have much more success persuading your kids to read if they are able to choose what to read.Validate their reading choices, engaging them to think and talk about what they read. Prod them a little to try something new--I often like to talk about it in terms of having a varied reading diet. Here are some of my favorite books to hook 5th and 6th graders.#SummerReading: 5th & 6thclick for full 2018 summer reading listsExciting Adventure & FantasyAru Shah and the End of Time, by Roshani ChokshiThe Girl Who Drank the Moon, by Kelley BarnhillThe Jumbies, by Tracey BaptistePeak, by Roland SmithThe Wonderling, by Mira BartokFunny StoriesFunny Girl, edited by Betsy BirdHamster Princess, by Ursula VernonPickle, by Kim BakerThe Strange Case of Origami Yoda, by Tom AnglebergerThe Terrible Two, by Mac BarnettHistorical FictionEcho, by Pam Munoz RyanThe Inquisitor's Tale, by Adam GidwitzThe Night Diary, by Veera HiranandaniRefugee, by Alan GratzThe War I Finally Won, by Kimberly Brubaker BradleyGraphic Novels We Love!Nimona, by Noelle StevensonThe Prince and the Dressmaker, by Jen WangReal Friends, by Shannon HaleSunny Side Up, by Jennifer L.
