We’re on (Google) cloud nine — blog.etsy.com

At Etsy, we are solving some of the most interesting and complex challenges in e-commerce, and our engineers view code as craft as they work to create the best possible experience for  buyers and sellers. Last year, we announced that we would be migrating to the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) during 2018 and 2019 to help support Etsy’s sharpened focus on our core marketplace and to create the very best user experience for the Etsy community. We’ve made fantastic progress with our migration to date. In less than a year since beginning our journey to the cloud, we’re excited to share that we’ve successfully migrated our site and mobile apps to GCP. This major step was completed quickly and with minimal disruption to our buyers and sellers. We believe that moving to the cloud is positioning us well for growth by allowing us to focus on strategic initiatives, enhance site performance, and improve engineering efficiency. We’ll be able to move faster and push the envelope when it comes to launching new experiments, particularly within search & discovery. All of this will help optimize the buyer experience and drive sales for our sellers. Moving to the cloud is also allowing us to make headway on our sustainability goal of reducing our energy consumption and powering Etsy with 100% renewable electricity by 2020. On the cloud, we can spin up hundreds of servers in minutes, whereas it would take months of budgeting, planning, and installing servers to get the same amount of compute power in data centers. We can also spin these servers down when not needed. A significant amount of work remains in order to complete the overall migration, but we’re excited about the progress we’ve made so far and are extremely proud of our dedicated engineering team.   Forward Looking Statements This blog post contains forward-looking statements within the meaning of the federal securities laws.
