How to Avoid FOMO in NYC | Tracy Kaler's New York Life + Travel Blog — tracysnewyorklife.com

How to avoid FOMO in NYC  Do you suffer from FOMO? I didn’t. That is until I moved to New York City. This town has something going on every minute of every day, and I, like other New Yorkers, can’t help but feel like I’m missing out, especially when I’m at home in front of my laptop rather than experiencing life in the city. If you feel overwhelmed by the endless number of events and awesome activities in the Big Apple, you’re not alone. You could, however, stand a few tips on how to deal with FOMO in NYC, because, for many of us, the struggle is real. Go somewhere. Yes, leaving your apartment is a no-brainer, even if, worse case scenario, you’re broke. With the city’s myriad free things to do, you never have to be stuck in your one-room apartment unless you choose to. So when FOMO strikes, take a walk in the park, go for a jog, meet up with a friend at a neighborhood pub, window shop at Bergdorf’s, or do anything that gives you reason to step outside your tiny abode, even if only for an hour.  I promise you’ll feel less deprived if you take a short jaunt about town. New York in small doses can be satisfying. Can’t buy? Window shop. Plan ahead. Plan at least one activity during the week and one every weekend. Whether you indulge in a fancy date night with your significant other, visit the Guggenheim, or stroll through Prospect Park with your girlfriends after dim sum in Chinatown,  two outings per week could be enough to satiate your hunger for excitement and adventure in the city that never sleeps. Be adventurous. While we gravitate toward the familiar, try doing something you’ve never done before. If you step out of your neighborhood, borough, and comfort zone once in a while, you might not think you’re missing out at all. If you tend to hang out uptown and rarely go south of 59th Street, venture downtown. And downtowners who swear they’ll never ride the subway past 23rd Street, head to Upper Manhattan. Check out East Harlem or get really crazy and travel further to The Bronx. You’ll be surprised. Discovering new sections of our great city is rewarding and inspiring, and believe it or not, you might even like where you end up. Live in the moment. I live in the moment in New York more than I’ve ever lived in the moment anywhere. Try to take each day and appreciate every minute and the nuances of life in NYC, which might seem insignificant, but they’re not. A slice of New York pizza. An egg cream. A Brooklyn accent. The M86 select bus service. (Yes!). The Staten Island Ferry. The Greek food scene in Astoria. The skyline. Or, without leaving your apartment, a yummy New York movie – one that makes you feel as if you’re out taking advantage of the city when you’re actually donning PJs and sipping your favorite beverage. Don’t ignore the obvious, but rather, relish it.                                              Appreciate the never-ending nuances of life in New York, such as a delectable egg cream. Say “No” to social media. Checking in with Facebook or Instagram every five minutes will only compound your issues. Browsing through updates and seeing photos of friends, family, and colleagues out and about living the exciting life that social channels “seem” to depict will probably make any case of FOMO worse. In fact, overuse of social media has been said to cause FOMO.If you’re feeling low because of a heavy workload and can’t get out in the city for a few days, stay off social completely. Once you’re caught up, you might be might able to attend that new exhibit at The Met, or grab one of New York’s best burgers with the friend you haven’t seen all year. Remember, you’ll have another chance. Tomorrow is another day in Gotham, and many of those star-studded events, must-attend parties, and only-in-New York attractions you missed will be there another time, or replaced by something comparable or more desirable. Although this city remains ever-changing, New York will always be New York. Remember how lucky you are to be here. Accept FOMO in NYC – it’s inevitable. Although this point is probably not what you want to hear, accepting that you will occasionally feel like you’re missing out on all the city offers is one way to get over, or at least manage FOMO. Try to be mindful that New York is an ever-evolving place and will always offer more to do than any one person could take in on any given day or in a lifetime. Isn’t that one of the reasons you live in New York?In a city like New York, FOMO is inevitable. How do you manage FOMO in NYC or anywhere? Also, growing old in NYC has its advantages. And qualities you need to live in NYC. Posted on June 7, 2019
