An NYC Summer Survival Guide in living, nyc life by Tracysnewyorklife An NYC summer survival guide   New York City feels very different during the warm-weather months. If you can get past the muggy air, being in the city in summertime can be enjoyable––with quieter streets and a slower pace. Since summer is basically here (with temps hovering in the 80s this week), we need to prepare for the heat and humidity to come. Get the most out of the season with this NYC summer survival guide. Carry a large city bag. A large city bag is key, so you can carry all the items you may need during a day out in NYC. But like any true New Yorker, you never want to sacrifice style. Online you can find gorgeous handbags including this 100% Made in Italy by Mirta. A great choice are woven totes––this style screams summer and can hold all your essentials with plenty of room to spare, and it’s perfect for the season. Wear linen and cotton. Your summer wardrobe should consist of light-weight garments made from breathable materials, such as linen and cotton. A cotton dress or linen short suit are perfect summer choices, although you’ll want a sweater for chilly air-conditioned spaces. Wedge sandals keep your feet cool and can easily transition from day to night. Never leave your apartment without a cool drink. Hydration is important all the time, but especially to survive a hot summer in New York. Have your water bottle–– preferably an insulated one to keep your beverage nice and cool––with you at all times. Usually, water is the best choice, but consider energy drinks when you’re working out. Apply sunscreen. Sunscreen is always necessary, but you want to apply it regularly during the summer since the rays are more intense than other times of the year. Carry a small container with you, and reapply during the day as needed. Ladies, if you’d like a little coverage but want to avoid a heavy foundation, opt for a tinted sunscreen before applying makeup. Find a shady spot in Central Park. When you need to get out of the heat of your apartment, venture outdoors and head for some shade in Central Park. Being surrounded by greenery outside is what summer is all about, but you want to do so comfortably. Bring your book and a blanket to unwind, or have a solo lunch and people-watch. Take a day trip to the beach. Luckily, New York isn’t far from the beach. Take a day trip to the Rockaways in Queens, Coney Island in Brooklyn, or Orchard Beach in the Bronx. Remember, swimming isn’t permitted since there are no lifeguards on duty at this time, but you can dig your toes in the sand. The Vitamin D will do you good. Face coverings and social distancing are required. Also, road trips when you need to get out of the city. And a gorgeous pocket park in Midtown. Posted on June 9, 2020
