Düsseldorf (dpa) - According to a new study, more powerful wind turbines could double electricity generation by 2030 using existing sites in Germany alone. The study, presented on Monday by the North Rhine-Westphalia Renewable Energies Association (LEE NRW) and the German Wind Energy Association, is confident that the trend towards ever larger wind turbines will continue. Furthermore, technological advances will allow the turbines to be used with more full-load hours and thus continuously generate more electricity.
By using modern wind turbines, more than 200 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity could be generated in 2030, stress the authors of the study prepared by Deutsche Windguard. If the total area for wind turbines were doubled to two percent of Germany's territory, generation could even be increased to 500 TWh. If electricity from wind turbines at sea were added, Germany’s entire demand for electricity could be met by wind energy. Demand currently totals a good 530 TWh per year.
