"We must never look the other way" — deutschland.de

The number of cases in which women are victims of assault is increasing worldwide, but also in Germany. "We must never look the other way when girls or women are threatened with violence or even attacked," said Chancellor Angela Merkel on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November. Germany, she said, is "doing its utmost" to combat this trend, both at home and internationally. 25 November also marks the start of the annual UN campaign "Orange the world", which lasts from the "International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women" until "International Human Rights Day" on 10 December. During these "16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence", buildings all over the world will be lit up in orange as a visible sign of community – as for example the Allianz Arena in Munich is today ahead of Bayern Munich's Champions League game (photo).
