One of Miami’s oldest cultural landmarks, Toower Theatre opened in 1926. The Art Deco movie house showcases a prominent 40-foot steel tower jutting from its neon marquee. During the 1950s and throughout the 1960s droves of Cuban refugees fled to Miami, and the area surrounding southwest Eighth Street was dubbed ‘Calle Ocho’, becoming a place of new beginnings for Cuban immigrants. Many Cuban families were introduced to the American culture through film at Tower Theater. The theatre transitioned from English language films to English with Spanish subtitles, then eventually to Spanish films. Bought by Miami Dade College the theatre functions today as an independent film house with and international movie selection.
