From Cliché to Clever: A Look at Banksy’s Divisive Work — vogue.com

Last fall, Banksy took over the streets of New York, spanning one month for a work he called “Better Out Than In,” which displayed a new piece of street art in an unannounced location every single day. Tonight, a new HBO documentary, Banksy Does New York, is exploring the 2013 guessing game project by sewing together user-generated content from all over the web, including YouTube videos and Instagram photos from those who dedicated a month to finding Banksy’s hidden treasures. Though the work drew some criticism for falling back on themes that Banksy’s previous work had already explored, it’s worth remembering that he (or she?) became such a public figure in the first place because that early radical work was anything but expected. Here, we take a look at ten of Banksy’s most famous pieces and rank them from cliché to clever.
