For the first time since R.E.M.’s breakup in 2011, frontman Michael Stipe returned to the stage and performed in concert.
Stipe served as the unannounced opening act for Patti Smith at New York’s Webster Hall gig on Monday night. He performed a six-song set, including R.E.M.’s s “Saturn Return” and “New Test Leper,” along with covers of Vic Chesnutt’s “Lucinda Williams”, Smith’s own “Wing”, Perfume Genius’ “Hood”, and “New York, New York”. Below, listen to audio and watch video of the set.
