The Fault In Our Stars is the book we all turn to when we need a good cry. The epic love story of Hazel and Gus is equal parts romantic and tragic, pretty much guaranteeing that we’ll sob buckets every time we read it – regardless of the fact that we all know how it ends. Who would have ever thought that a word as simple as “okay” would completely ruin us emotionally.
It turns out that John Green had planned a couple of alternate endings to the beloved novel – and they’re actually pretty disturbing. He shared the first original ending with actor Nat Wolff back in 2014, explaining that he’d wanted Hazel and Peter Van Houten to honor Augustus’s life in a “sacrificial way.” So, John wrote a 40-page ending that followed Hazel and Peter as they track down a drug lord and kill him. Oh, and then Hazel and Peter “die in a hail of bullets from all the security around the drug lord.” Yep, The Fault in Our Stars almost turned into an episode of Breaking Bad. His editor thought that he might have been joking – but John was totally serious.
