Beauty Moment: Suki Waterhouse On Bold Brows, Breakup Bangs, and Being the Face of Burberry's New Perfume — vogue.com

British model Suki Waterhouse’s high-profile romance with actor Bradley Cooper has made her a regular tabloid presence of late. But even her recent turns on the SAG red carpet and at the Sundance Film Festival paled in comparison to the style statement she made at the menswear collections in London earlier this month. Clad in a crisp, tailored suit—which she paired with fresh skin, relaxed waves, and her signature darkened brows—Waterhouse sent flashbulbs popping in plunging burgundy at Christopher Bailey’s Burberry Prorsum show. The 22-year-old English rose has been on Bailey’s radar since house creative consultant Elliott Smedley happened upon her in the most precarious of places. “He saw me at the gym and thought I walked enthusiastically. That’s how I actually got the campaign,” Waterhouse laughingly admits of the events leading up to her recent casting as the face of Burberry’s Brit Rhythm women’s fragrance, a floral blend of lavender, orange blossom, and vetiver that launches worldwide today, following the debut of its masculine counterpart last fall. Of working with the quintessential U.K. brand, she adds, “It’s kind of the ultimate thing you can do as a British girl. It’s a dream come true.  It sounds cheesy, but it is!” Inspired by Bailey’s well-documented love of music and, more specifically, the anticipation and adrenaline of a live show, the fragrance’s campaign shoot put Waterhouse on surprisingly familiar ground. “I play the guitar, but I’m mostly writing stuff and singing right now,” she says of her future musical ambitions, for which she is currently working with producers Jake Gosling (Paloma Faith, One Direction, Ed Sheeran) and Matt Squire (Ke$ha, Demi Lovato). “I’m going to put something out, but it’s hard to fit in,” she admits. She’s not kidding. In addition to modeling, Waterhouse also stars in the forthcoming Christian Ditter–directed romantic comedy Love, Rosie alongside Lily Collins and Sam Claflin. It’s enough to make anyone’s beauty regimen take a back seat, but luckily for Waterhouse, looking good is the family business; her father, the renowned London plastic surgeon Norman Waterhouse, developed his own cult skincare line six years ago, of which she is a devoted fan. Here, Suki calls in from L.A. to talk fragrance, breakup bangs, and the secret to those enviably thick arches.   First and foremost, let’s talk about the amazing Burberry suit.  Is that fairly typical of your style sensibility? That suit is my favorite thing I’ve ever worn. It was such a game changer. I felt so good in that thing. Generally, though, my style is on a constant roll. It all depends on these shopping sprees I go on. I just went on one, and now I’m wearing a completely different wardrobe and I can’t be bothered with anything else that I own. What were some highlights from this latest spree? Can you give us a full report?  Well, I just went for the first time to Reformation on Melrose [Avenue], and to a new place called Bustown Modern, which is this incredible vintage store, also on Melrose, that’s only been open for a few weeks, and I just went crazy. I got this Yves Saint Laurent runway jacket from the 80s—I got it all! And I just got an old Burberry trench coat from eBay—that, with just, like, a pair of heels is so classic and amazing. An endless Burberry wardrobe—of both clothing and fragrances—is likely just one of the perks of your new gig. Were you a big fragrance wearer before you signed on to do Brit Rhythm? I remember making my own fragrances when I was young. That was a big thing that me and my sister loved doing—you know, when you just go around the garden and mush [flowers] up with water and give them to your mom. But truthfully, I haven’t ever really worn perfume until now. When you do wear perfume, how do you typically wear it? I’m always being hugged all day when I meet people, so I put a little behind my ears and on my neck and a little bit on my wrists. I do it in the morning. Is there anything else that’s part of your morning routine? Not really. I usually don’t think about anything until I leave the house, and then it depends what I’m leaving the house for. Like right now, I’m wearing my pajamas and I’m not wearing any makeup, and I’ll go for a walk or a run and I won’t think about it.   Are you a big skincare junkie? My dad has a cream [that he developed], actually. I love it and I kind of just use that. It’s called HealGel. It’s very soothing and keeps everything even. I also take Lysine [supplements]. I don’t know if it’s good for the skin, but it’s good for my immune system and stops me from getting ill. I also take a skin and hair pill, although I don’t take it every day, so it’s hard to tell whether it helps or not. You barely need any makeup with brows like yours. Are they naturally that dark and thick? I used to shave them when I was a kid. I think they’re actually uneven now! They’re naturally really dark, though—my mom has the same thing—and I love eyebrow products. I think eyebrow gel is genius. There’s an amazing Laura Mercier one, but anything works. The other day I had my eyebrows threaded at [London’s] Blink Brow Bar and they gave me some eyebrow oil that I’m excited to try out. What about your hair? Have you always been a blonde? I’ve always been blonde. The most recent person that has been cutting my fringe and coloring me is George Northwood. Over the last five years, I’ve gone in and out of having [bangs]. It usually happens that I don’t have them, and then I break up with someone and get them again, and then I grow them out over the course of a relationship—and then I cut them again. To style them, I just use Bumble and bumble.’s Thickening Spray, which you put in while your hair is wet. Can we expect to see you at the fall 2014 collections—perhaps having another menswear-inspired moment? I actually just got fitted for another one of those suits that I’m going to wear for an event and I can’t wait! For the shows, I’ll be in London at Burberry and I think the Tom Ford show, too.
