As his show opens at London’s Barbican this week, the French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier talks to the curator Thierry-Maxime Loriot about his early work and his love for the UK city. In the 1970s, Gaultier remembers spotting a poster with bright red lips and dripping blood on the Kings Road plugging The Rocky Horror Picture Show—an aesthetic he says you can see in his own clothes.
