This contemplation meditation is an opportunity to focus "thinking mind" on the mystery of being.
The yogic mantra "so hum" is not only a reflection of the sound of the breath but also carries a contemplative meaning: "I am that" (so = "I am" and hum = "that"). Here, "that" refers to all of creation, the one breathing us all. This contemplation meditation is an opportunity to focus "thinking mind" on the mystery of being and to reflect upon the interdependent nature of all phenomenon revealed by the sages and confirmed by contemporary physics.

When used for meditation, "Soham" acts as a natural mantra to control one's breathing pattern, to help achieve deep breath, and to gain concentration. Sooooo... is the sound of inhalation, and is remembered in the mind along with that inhalation. Hummmm... is the sound of exhalation, and is r...

Soham or Sohom or Sohum or Sohaum (so 'ham सो ऽहम्[1]) is the Sanskrit for "I am He/That". (See also: Tat Tvam Asi). When it applies to a person's name, according to Vedic philosophy it means identifying oneself with the universe or ultimate reality. Some say that when a child is born it cries Koham-Koham which means Who am I? That is when the universe replies back Soham. You are the same as I am. It also stems from the Sanskrit word which means, "self pride."

My cat, chanting, purring, and my experience at my meditation center http://scientificink.com/blog/2009/06/18/my-cat-chanting-purring-and-my-experience-at-my-meditation-center/
Chanting is like purring and it gives me joy
I shared this story about my cat and my own experience chanting and becoming more joyful through chanting and meditation when I hosted a program earlier this month at the Siddha Yoga Meditation Center in Ann Arbor. My cat’s name is Floyd, and the reason I want to tell you about him is that my experience with him parallels a little bit my experience in Siddha Yoga. It’s a story of purring to share increasing comfort and joy.

After reading this article, you may have a new appreciation for your cat. She is also president of Fauna Communication Research Institute, where amazing breakthroughs are being made that may forever change the way we listen to the animals. Elizabeth was truly delightful to speak with. Her love and devotion to animals came through quite clearly during our interview. In fact, she was walking one of her beloved horses throughout most of our conversation and spoke to me from her cell phone.

7 Species That Purr Besides Cats
Purring isn’t just for cats. Several other species are also thought to make the same soothing sound. Cats, being the best-known purrers and frequently underfoot, are the most observed. They are believed to purr to express pleasure and to soothe themselves when they are stressed or in pain. Purring is a form of communication, not a reflex, as my dear departed cat Howard demonstrated: when he wanted the attention of someone far away from him, he purred louder. He also turned the volume up when, at dawn each morning, he stuck his nose in my sleeping husband’s ear and purred his insistence that it was time for breakfast.
