As regular readers know, I occasionally like to dig into the recent box office past and see how films performed over the long run. The news that caught my eye and inspired this update is the fact that Walt ‘s Need For Speed has crossed $200 million at the worldwide box office. The production is a classic example of a film that stiffs in America but becomes an out-and-out smash overseas. The video game adaptation earned just $43m in America but tripled that on foreign shores, earning $66m alone in China. Considering the film cost $66m to produce, its $159m overseas take, for a $202m global cume, qualifies as a solid hit. We may not get a sequel, but it should be more-than-profitable in the long run.
