The Kunstraum is an association created in 1973 with the aim of being a privately subsidised not-for-profit art club. Around 300 people from all sectors of the Munich art world finance this venue. In 1996 the gallery moved to the city centre. Voluntary curators regularly choose artists who are then allowed to exhibit in the space. Many local artists find sponsorships through Kunstraum. Recent events include exhibitions by Zbyněk Baladrán who represented the Czech Republic at the Venice Biennale, and German artist Thomas Kratz, and a talk given by Professor Wolfgang Ullrich on originality, the cult of novelty, and its possible end. Kunstraum is a great spot for those looking for an alternative type of experience.
