King Juan Carlos of Spain, 76, is the third European monarch over the past year to abdicate the throne to a son, following Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in October and King Albert II of Belgium in July.
Juan Carlos presided over the second longest monarchy in the world and was one of the few European monarchs of the “old guard” left, along with Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Margrethe II of Denmark, Carl Gustaf of Sweden, and Harald of Norway.
