Solis Theatre is based in Plaza Independencia, where you will find a statue of General Artigas riding on a horse. Artigas is considered the father of Uruguayan independence, having liberated Montevideo from the Iberian colonial rule. This neoclassical theatre is therefore symbolic, for it was built in the formative years of Uruguayan independence, a period of time that was far from stable.
So it is appropriate that the theatre will be hosting a concert celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Artigas. Hugo Fattoruso, a popular Uruguayan composer, will be playing his best compositions in the first part of the concert. Then in the second part, the Youth Orchestra will be performing Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5. Also look out for Montevideo's Philharmonic Orchestra, who will be playing at Solis Theatre as well this month.
