Now, Clean Bandit (which also includes Luke Patterson) is a quartet of a completely different kind: The group’s single “Rather Be” topped charts in the U.K. this winter, and their debut album New Eyes drops in the U.S. today. Unsurprisingly, they’ve become known for prominently featuring the sounds of acoustic violin and cello on their tracks, and the sonorous strings have proven to be a refreshing reminder that real instrumentals can add a powerful depth to pop music. “We’re not really the standard pop band, but at the same time I think we wanted to break the idea that if you don’t have knowledge of classical music you can’t like it,” Amin-Smith explained. “It was important for us to seem accessible.”
