Geneva’s very own multidisciplinary contemporary art festival,
Le Bâtie, hits the streets at the end of the summer, with a 16-day programme of music, dance, theatre and performance art scattered over Geneva and its neighbouring regions, including Annemasse, Annecy and Divonne over the border in France. The festival’s heart is Le Bâtie itself, constructed in the centre of the city as a space for social gatherings, meals, and dances into the night. The festival originated in 1977, with the intention of promoting an alternative creative scene. 30 years later and the vision was undoubtedly realised, with cultural performances filling up public halls, community centres, cinemas, parks and other more unusual venues further afield. Since 2002 the festival has been officially supported by the city of Geneva, enabling it to widen its reach in terms of quantity and variety of events on offer.
