They Came Together is a hilarious satire of romantic comedies, and stars Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler are great.
David Wain’s first movie Wet Hot American Summer was not a success at the box office upon its release in 2001, grossing only $295,206. In the time since the summer camp satire has become a cult classic. For the first time, Wain has made another feature length film with his Wet Hot American Summer co-writer Michael Showalter, this time satirizing the romantic comedy genre. In my favorite scene in They Came Together, there’s a joke that keeps repeating itself over and over to the point where it gets funnier every time due to the fact that it’s crazy that the joke is going on this long and still working. This is largely indicative of the movie as a whole. A full length satire/parody shouldn’t work with the amount of zany humor injected into They Came Together, but it does.
