A relatively new addition to Kansas City’s art community Haw Contemporary, which was established in September of 2013, focuses on presenting a diverse body of works by both locally based and international artists. With Anthony Baab’s Ummagumma the gallery presents works from a talented Kansas City based artist who works across a number of mediums, but most recently a series of sculptures, photographs and large-scale models that examine the idea of self-reflexivity in a minimalist sense. In Ummagumma, Baab takes a photograph of a glossy folded piece of paper which he prints, re-folds and re-photographs and later draws on to give the image an animated feel. Inspired by sci-fi and fantasy art of the 1970s and the Dutch artist M.C. Escher’s graphic and surreal landscapes Baab imbues his resulting images with a sense of kinesis and mutation.
