Following Brazil’s lackluster performance in the FIFA World Cup, which ended in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, local soccer legend Arthur “Zico” Coimbra said that teams should stop exporting their best players to Europe.
“The biggest problem is that Brazil has become an exporter of football talent,” Zico was quoted as saying in an interview in the Economic Times on Sunday. “The clubs from Europe take away all the talent from Brazil. Brazilian boys as young as 14 and 15 are now based in Europe and they spend their best years there. When they come back to Brazil, they are past their prime,” he said.
