Although the record was written and recorded in a ragged, rat-infested studio the band rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy, new single “Live On” finds them sounding as bright and upbeat as ever, no doubt thanks in part to the involvement of producer Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Washed Out). Together they’ve crafted a sleek metropolitan roots rock that exists in the same sonic universe as Ryan Adams or the Gaslight Anthem (before they went butt-rock). “Live On” shimmers with life and surges with urgency, and its message of perseverance is utilitarian enough to apply to whatever life’s throwing at you.
