Owned by two friends, Barrel House Distilling Company produces oak rum, pure blue vodka, Devil John moonshine and, of course, bourbon. The oak rum is thought to be the only of its kind made in Kentucky and gets its unique flavour from being aged in used, charred oak bourbon barrels. Another first, for Lexington at least, is the pure blue vodka which was the first distilled spirit to be made at Barrel House. The moonshine is a favourite among visitors and is named in honor of the legendary civil war soldier, lawman and moonshiner from Kentucky - Devil John. Finally the bourbon itself is still ageing and the Barrel House owners insist that it won’t be removed from the barrels until it is ready to do so. When that will be they aren’t too sure, but expect it to occur at some point in 2014 so visitors this year may be lucky enough to have a taste of the freshly finished liquor.
