But considering how low-key its release is, that may not be a guarantee. Based on ‘s 1993 Newbery-winning novel, The Giver faces a similar quandary as something like Walt ‘s John Carter or Disney’s Bicentennial Man. While it was considered somewhat original and groundbreaking in 1993, the bare bones of its story and themes have been riffed on countless times over the last ten years that this feature film adaptation now feels like a rip-off of the the books/films that followed in its wake.
