After HitFix claimed yesterday that Warner Bros. apparently has some sort of “no jokes” policy in place for the studio’s future DC Comics superhero film adaptations (starting with the upcoming film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), fans and entertainment press were abuzz with debates over the implications of such a policy, and why it is a bad idea. The report suggests the policy is somehow going to prevent any humor from appearing in the cinematic DC universe from now on, and that it’s going to ruin the films and hand a huge victory to Disney-Marvel. This would all indeed be disturbing, and the potential harm to Warner’s superhero properties quite apparent, if there was really a strict “no jokes” policy in play. It’s a good thing, then, that of course no such actual policy exists, at least not in the way it’s been portrayed. Let’s consider what’s really going on, what sort of actual approach the studio prefers, and why the facts should make it clear that the concern of the last two days is unnecessary.
