There was the abstract Alexandre de Betak set, and the killer Michel Gaubert–curated runway music and, of course, there were the clothes— but this year, Laura Mulleavy and Kate Mulleavy’s Rodarte show featured one final Insta-cult novelty. “We just wanted to make them more cool,” said makeup artist James Kaliardos of the “grungy” brow rings his team was gluing along the length of models’ arches backstage. To soften the rest of the face, he gave their cheeks a warm, healthy flush. “I’m just really fluffing it on,” Kaliardos explained of the rosy bronze side of NARS’ forthcoming Duo Eyeshadow in St-Paul-De-Vence, which he blended across models’ lids, dragging it downward on the outer corners—“like Laura does it”—and using a swirl of the same compact to carve out cheeks before adding a bit of lush pink-beige on the mouth. “It’s finished, in a simple way,” he said of the look, which added a jolt of street-derived subtext to the designers’ bedazzled parkas, high-waisted jeans, and sequin-and-feather finale gowns.
