When one thinks of Le Bernardin, that midtown behemoth under the guise of iconic chef Eric Ripert and chef sommelier Aldo Sohm, the word “casual” doesn’t usually come to mind. But with the opening of Aldo Sohm Wine Bar down the street last week, it’s clear that the duo is going for a laid-back quality distinct from its mother restaurant. “The idea is that Aldo is inviting you into his living room,” says Ripert. Tall, backlit shelves are lined with vintage toys and art books, so that it becomes easy to imagine yourself in a friend’s home—albeit a friend who lives on Park Avenue. The food is similarly convivial, with dishes like mini boudin blancs or baby beet skewers for the post-work crowd, plus a selection of French cheeses and charcuterie (it’s also open for lunch).
