On 16 September, 1977, at the age of 53, Maria Callas died alone in her Paris apartment, where she had lived practically as a recluse since retiring from the stage. Her death is attributed to heart failure that may have been linked to an overdose of the sleeping pills on which she had grown increasingly dependent in later life. And so concluded a real-life operatic tragedy of our time.
The site of her Paris residence, 36 Avenue Georges Mandel is marked by a marble plaque dedicated to her memory. There, just a stone's throw from the Trocadero in the chic 16th arrondissement, visitors will also find a laneway marked Allée Maria Callas.
