Oktoberfest, the annual festival that gives beer and food lovers the chance to indulge in traditional German fare, is upon us.
The celebration, which began in Munich in 1810 at the royal wedding of Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese, became a worldwide festival in the mid-20th century.
The original Oktoberfest started Oct. 12, and ended on Oct. 17 with a horse race. As the years passed, the festival grew, and what started off as a relatively small celebration in Bavaria is now a festival recognized by millions. But Munich is where it all began.
