No, we're not talking about celebrities' babies or the newest heir to the British throne – we're talking giant pandas!
Giant pandas are an endangered species – there are only about 1,600 wild giant pandas scattered in the mountains of central China (according to a 2004 census). In the U.S., 12 giant pandas live in four zoos throughout the country, and all are on loan from China. The intent of the agreements between the zoos and Chinese conservation organizations is to preserve the endangered species; the pandas remain property of China, as do any cubs born in captivity.
