Huddling around a transportable PA setup with eight big loudspeakers that they cart around the city of Lom Sak (about five hours from Bangkok), Khun Narin Electric Phin Band play a kind of celebratory, hypnotic Thai psych rock called phin prayuk. Named after a three-string instrument they use called the phin, handmade by bandleader Khun Narin, the group is ever-changing, with members rotating over the years. But the music they make is consistently singular and spellbinding. “There is a raw energy and joy in their music that, combined with the unique instrumentation, really struck me in a different way than the Western music I mostly listen to for work or pleasure,” says Josh Marcy, an American sound engineer who, this year, traveled to Thailand to record and release an album of their songs, now available on Innovative Leisure.
