Kmart is the latest retailer to be hit by a data breach.
Kmart announced late Friday that its stores' payment systems were hit by malware early last month, compromising an untold number of credit and debit card numbers. The company says its IT team first discovered the data breach on Thursday and launched an investigation into it with a security firm.
"Based on the forensic investigation to date, no personal information, no debit card PIN numbers, no email addresses and no social security numbers were obtained by those criminally responsible. There is also no evidence that kmart.com customers were impacted," Alasdair James, president and chief member officer of Kmart, wrote in a note to customers published online Friday. "This data breach has been contained and the malware has been removed. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our members and customers."
