Much like Deadwood and The Knick, Boardwalk Empire is a fictionalized version of the more unsavory parts of America’s history. A period drama about Atlantic City during the Prohibition era, the show is yet another reminder that our nation was founded by those who survived by being ruthless.
The ruthless one in Boardwalk is, of course, Steve Buscemi’s Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, a character loosely based on real-life Atlantic City political boss and all-around shady dude Enoch “Nucky” Johnson. Thompson starts out as just a guy trying to make a buck in a world where booze is illegal; before long, he’s sucked into the drug game, and goes deeper and deeper with each season.
