We get it: You retired your denim skirt back in the early to mid-aughts in a purifying cleanse of all things that reminded you of the Uggs and iced latte era of celebrity style. But look, it’s back, and you’d better get used to it, because it’s actually really quite charming, and when deployed correctly, really chic. Consider the mini: No longer the purview of those wearing terry or velour zip hoodies and oversize sunglasses, the new denim skirt is still short as anything, sure, but with a decidedly stylish flair. Dark-rinsed and buttoned up the front with a gently frayed edge, à la Marques ‘ Almeida for Topshop—as sported by Phoebe Collings-James at a dinner for Frieze in London last month, or by any number of Vogue girls on any given day around the office—it comes off as go-go gamine, rather than Britney Spears barefoot at the gas station. Less SoCal than swinging sixties, is what we’re saying. Paired with a turtleneck and nubby tights, a warmly burnished chestnut-colored riding boot and camel coat, you’re Ali MacGraw meets Anna Karina, and entirely fall-perfect.
