Gary Hanson, the executive director of the Cleveland Orchestra, announced Tuesday that he would retire next October — a few years shy of the orchestra’s 2017-18 centennial season.
“The centennial of the Cleveland Orchestra needs to be about the future,’’ Mr. Hanson, 61, said in an interview. He added that he planned to retire when his contract was up. “It needs to be the beginning of the next 100 years, not the end of the first 100.”
