It was an operatic domino effect, or prima donna-mo effect. Anna Netrebko’s decision to withdraw from a series of performances in Munich means that New York will be getting a new Mimi in “La Bohème” later this month: Sonya Yoncheva.
The cascade was set in motion when Ms. Netrebko withdrew from a starry production of Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut” next month at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, where she was to sing opposite Jonas Kaufmann. Nikolaus Bachler, the opera house’s general manager, said in a statement that she had withdrawn “due to differing artistic perspectives on the work.”
