On Halloween last Friday afternoon, the Los Angeles Zoo got a treat and not a trick when it witnessed the first hippopotamus birth at the zoo in 26 years.
The zoo's 10-year-old Mara gave birth to a healthy calf after two and a half hours of labor. The baby's sex is yet to be determined, as zoo staff will need to wait for a chance to get a closer look at the new addition.
Mara came to the Los Angeles Zoo from the Topeka Zoo in December 2013, to become a companion for the Los Angeles facility's 3-year-old male Adhama. With an eight-month typical gestation period for hippos, it's clear the two hit it off rather quickly.
