As we approach the holiday season, more and more family-oriented entertainment will be coming to the fore, just not in the way you might expect. There’s the straight-up Stephen Sondheim shot to the arm with Into the Woods, the heavily violent but technically young adult action-adventure fodder of The Hobbit, and the obvious child-pandering of Minions. But then there are the values movies with an edge. Consider taking the kids to see Selma this coming winter to learn about the battle for civil rights in mid-century America. Or fire up the family van and go see Chappie, an allegory for self-acceptance and rising above your oppressors—probably through the power of love. And if in doubt, just watch Grumpy Cat’s Christmas movie on the Lifetime channel. It’s a mixed bag of social messaging, consumerism, and sentiment—much like the Christmas holiday itself!
