It has become clear tonight that Qatar is to be cleared of major wrong-doing and corruption in its bid to win the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. A report to be released tomorrow by FIFA, the governing body for football (soccer) worldwide, will raise questions about the behaviour of Qatar – and other nations too, including Russia (which hosts the 2018 tournament), Australia and England, which were bidders for forthcoming tournaments. But it will not allege corruption – and therefore the likelihood of Qatar being stripped of the tournament is now extinguished.
