Lifetime really rocked the boat with its Aaliyah biopic.
The flick about the late R&B singer aired on Saturday, and let's just say online reaction has not been kind. From the time it was announced, the TV movie has been fraught with controversy. The family of Aaliyah, who died in a plane crash in 2001 at age 22, has been vocal against the film.
In addition, casting problems have dogged production on Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B for months. Disney Channel star Zendaya Coleman was originally supposed play the lead, but dropped out over production issues. Up-and-comer Alexandra Shipp filled in, though Aaliyah fans were still not pleased. There were also accusations of colorism when light-skinned actors were cast to play Missy Elliott and Timbaland.
