AT&T has just taken a small step in the direction of user privacy by suggesting in a legal brief that cellphone location data might need stronger legal protections.
Previously, law enforcement agents were able to obtain location data from cellphone providers without having to get a warrant from a judge, using a simple court order. In June, however, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Florida ruled that this practice was unconstitutional, becoming the first appeals court to rule that U.S. citizens have a reasonable expectation of privacy in their cellphone location data.
