Purple Mask, a 1948 portrait of Man Ray's wife, Juliet, sold for three times its estimate at €115,500
A 15 November sale at Sotheby’s Paris of 270 works from the Man Ray estate took in around €2.7m, near the top end of its €2m-€3m pre-sale estimate (30% of the lots went unsold). There were no fireworks, but the auction is perhaps a pointer to the steady state of the Modernist art market. The last comparable sale from the artist’s estate, in 1995, included 550 lots and sold for a total of $5.9m dollars.
