In 2008, Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit put themselves on the indie music map with a jaw-dropping rendition of Fleet Foxes’ “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song”. Since then, sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg have spun several other lovely covers, including Jack White’s “Love Interruption” and R.E.M.’s “Walk Unafraid”. Their latest comes in the form of Simon and Garfunkel’s “America”.
A staple of First Aid Kit’s live show, their version of “America” boasts impeccable vocal harmonies and soothing pedal steel. In a statement, the two-piece explained why they chose to cover the track, explaining, “The structure of the song and the melody just make for an epic journey. The lyrics are like a poem, without a single rhyme. It contains some of our favorite lines, like, ‘Toss me a cigarette I think there’s one in my raincoat.’”
