Earlier this year, Marissa Nadler released a lovely and spectral album called July. Now, the Massachusetts-based musician has returned with Before July: Demos & Unreleased Songs, a collection of four album outtakes and a cover Elliott Smith’s “Pitseleh”, the latter of which you can stream below.
Nadler’s otherworldly voice delicately captures Smith’s heartbreaking vulnerability, especially when she sings, “And I was bad news for you just because I never meant to hurt you.” With subtle synths and a light chord progression, it’s an absolutely gorgeous take on one of the late singer/songwriter’s best tracks.
