Some show their solidarity with workers by going down into coal mines where females, let alone First Ladies, had previously feared to tread—hi, Eleanor Roosevelt! Some tell you that this is what 40, or 80, looks like—what’s new, Gloria Steinem! And at least one came blazing out of a place called Nutbush, Tennessee, shaking a tail feather, shaking off an abusive partner, and shaking up any preconceived notions about the perils of reinvention.
